Several feared dead in tragic Webuye-Bungoma Highway accident
By Emmanuel Rono, June 10, 2026Several people have been confirmed dead and others seriously injured following a horrific late-night road accident at Makotelo along the busy Webuye-Malaba Highway.
The accident, which occurred near midnight, involved a public service vehicle (matatu) travelling from Nairobi and a trailer heading towards Webuye from Kanduyi.
According to a preliminary report from Bungoma South Sub-County Police Commander, William Letting on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, it is feared that five people could have lost their lives.
The survivors are currently receiving emergency medical treatment at a local hospital.
According to eyewitnesses, the trailer collided with the oncoming matatu, dragging it for a considerable distance off the road and into a nearby maize plantation.
“Ilikuwa kama saa tano inaingia saa sita usiku. Tulikuwa tumelala tukasikia mshindo mkubwa. Tulipotoka tulikuta trela limefuruta hiyo matatu mpaka kwenye mahindi chini. Tulijaribu kusaidia sana lakini kwa bahati mbaya wengi walikuwa tayari wamefariki. Ni watu wawili tu ndio walikuwa wamepona kidogo kidogo,” one witness stated.
