Senate set to begin hearing of impeachment case against Nyamira Governor Nyaribo
The Senate is set to begin deliberations on the impeachment charges brought forward by the Nyamira County Assembly against Governor Amos Kimwomi Nyaribo.
In a statement released by the Senate, Speaker Amason Kingi announced that the House will convene on Thursday, November 27, 2025, for a special sitting to consider the allegations facing the governor.
The notice, dated November 26, 2025, was issued in accordance with Article 181 of the Constitution, Section 33(3)(a) of the County Governments Act, and Standing Order 80(1)(a).
According to the Speaker, the sitting will commence at 2:30 p.m., marking a key step in the impeachment process that began after the Nyamira County Assembly passed a resolution to remove Governor Nyaribo from office.
During the special sitting, senators will decide whether to form a special committee to investigate the matter or to hear the case in plenary. The decision will determine the structure and pace of the proceedings.

The Senate will examine the charges outlined by the County Assembly, which are expected to mirror grievances raised in the impeachment motion.
Both the Assembly and the Governor’s defence team will be allowed to present evidence and arguments before the House.
At the end of the hearings, the Senate will determine whether the allegations meet the constitutional threshold for removing a county governor from office.
“Senators will have the opportunity to examine the allegations against Governor Nyaribo, which are expected to reflect issues raised by the County Assembly in its impeachment motion,” the senate said.
“The Senate will listen to evidence presented by both the County Assembly and the Governor’s defence team before deciding as to whether the charges meet the constitutional threshold for removal from office.”
Nyaribo’s impeachment
This development comes just days after the Nyamira County Assembly overwhelmingly voted to impeach Governor Nyaribo, paving the way for the matter to be forwarded to the Senate for final determination.

He was impeached after 23 out of 31 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) voted to remove him from office.
The motion, on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, sponsored by Bonyamatuta Ward MCA Julius Kimwomi Matwere, accused the governor of gross violation of the Constitution, abuse of office and illegal handling of a payroll audit.
