Senate fines Sakaja for snubbing summons

A Senate Committee has fined Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja (pictured) for skipping their meeting for a year to respond to queries on the regeneration programme, especially in various estates in the capital city.

The Senate Roads, Transport and Infrastructure Committee chaired by Karungo Wa Thang’wa (Kiambu) described the failure of the Governor to appear before it as contemptuous and summoned him to appear before the committee tomorrow.

Plight of residents

Yesterday the Senators charged that Sakaja instead of prioritising service to Nairobi residents, he has chosen to globetrot and dine with kings.

“It has taken a year for the governor to appear before this committee to address the plight of his residents yet he is dining with the Kings and Queens and going abroad,” said a frustrated Thang’wa.

He further said, “the Governor is consequently fined Sh500,000. He is directed to cut short his trip wherever he is and appear before this committee on Thursday. The committee does not believe that he has travelled out of the country.”

The committee also wants the Nairobi County boss to avail the travel manifest upon his return to prove that he travelled out of the country.

What irked the senators is that the governor through the acting County Secretary Patrick Analo wrote a letter to the committee requesting another date to appear.
