A Senate watchdog committee has asked the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate how the defunct Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) spent Sh27 billion.

This comes as top Nairobi County government officers are in the spotlight over Sh600 million in suspicious expenditures under the previous administration between 2020 and 2022.

Now Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja wants the Senate County Public Accounts Committee to call for an audit of funds transferred to NMS, with an audit report questioning the spending of Sh11 billion.

Sakaja, appearing before the committee led Moses Kajwang’ (Homa Bay), asked lawmakers probe how NMS left the county with pending bills of more than Sh15 billion in its two-year tenure.

According to Sakaja, NMS received Sh27 billion during the two years of its existence but left more than Sh15 billion in pending bills for his administration to clear.

“The State House Comptroller should appear before the committee to answer the questions. NMS, should account for the cumulative Sh43 billion and not push the liabilities to the county government,” said Sakaja.

The committee agreed with Sakaja’s request to set a day to deal with the operations of  NMS.

“The accounting officer of the office of the presidency will have to appear before the committee to shed more light on how Sh11 billion was spent in the fiscal year ended 2021,” said  Senator Kajwang’.
