Senate has approved the nomination of former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama as a commissioner at Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) representing the public.

Muthama, who has been United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party chairman, resigned on Friday, February 17 ahead of today’s vetting at the Senate.

He was among 171 applicants shortlisted for the position.

Other shortlisted candidates include; former Kisii Governor James Ongwae, former Matungu MP David Aoko Were, Former Kiminini MP Chris Wamalwa, Aruma John Ekale, former Aldai MP Cornelly Serem, and Limuru MP Peter Mungai Mwathi.

Muthama’s resignation

His resignation was in accordance with the constitution which dictates that a member of the commission is prohibited from holding office in a political party.

“I have handed over my resignation to the party headquarters. What I’m doing right now is handing over to the party secretariat,” Muthama told a local publication on February 17.

Bomet Senator Hillary Sigei was chairing the committee that approved the former Senator.

Once sworn in, Muthama will join other commissioners at PSC in foreseeing smooth running of the National Assembly, and Senate.
