Pemwai Girls High School in Baringo county has been closed indefinitely following the death of a student on Sunday night, sparking demonstrations from colleagues.

The deceased—Faith Jelimo (16), a Form Two student is said to have felt unwell but was allegedly not attended to by the school’s authorities.

“Due to the foregoing, we have taken the decision to close down the school indefinitely,” read the notice from the school management.

A sombre mood engulfed Jelimo’s home in Mosop, Nandi county, after her family received news of her death.

The parents, Shadrack and Julia Karone, have demanded justice for their daughter.

“We are demanding answers from the school as we were not shown any letter to the effect that our daughter was treated after falling ill. It is very sad to lose a child who had gone to school without any health complications,” Karoney said at his home.

The family has demanded the Ministry of Education takes stern action against the school management and investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of their daughter.
