Sarah Moraa, Alex Ng’eno land gold at African Championships

Sarah Moraa and Alex Ng’eno secured Kenya's first gold medals at the 23rd African Senior Athletics Championships in Douala, Cameroon, finishing first in the women's and men's 800m finals.

Moraa clocked 2:00.27 ahead of compatriot and National Champion Lilian Adira who settled for silver on 2:00.36. Moroccan Soukaina Hajji bagged the bronze clocking 2:00.91.

Moraa who came third at the national trials will be keen to follow in the footsteps of her cousin Mary Moraa who is the 2024 Africa Games 400m Gold medalist.

Alex Kipng’etich Ngeno secured Kenya’s second gold medal at the championships after he finished first in the two-lap race, clocking 1:45.02 ahead of Botswana’s Kethobogile Haingura and Ugandan Tom Dradriga who clocked 1:45.54 and 1:46.01 for silver and bronze respectfully.

Kenya’s treasure hunt was kept well on course in the men's 3000m steeplechase final as the 2021 World Under-20 Championships gold winner Edmond Serem clinched silver, running an 8:21.94 closely behind Uganda’s Leonard Chemutai who clocked 8:21.30.

Kenya’s Mathew Kosgei wrapped the podium places in a near photo finish with compatriot Serem as he clocked 8:21.98. Collins Kiprop, the other Kenyan in the race finished fifth with a time of 8:29.06.

Kenya had to settle for an out-of-podium position in the men’s 400m final as Boniface Mweresa came fourth, clocking 45.62 in a race won by Senegalese Cheikh Tidiane Diouf (45.23). Lee Eppie of Botswana won silver while Nigeria’s Samuel Ogazi came in third.

Kenya won the 22nd edition of the African Senior Athletics Championships held at the Côte d’Or National Sports Complex in Mauritius, collecting 10 gold medals, five silver, and eight bronze medals.

The event which kicked off on Friday, June 21, 2024, will end on Wednesday, June 26, 2024.
