Salasya kicked out of key House committee
By Kepher Otieno, March 6, 2024Mumias East Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Salasya has been kicked out of the powerful Committee on Regional Development.
Yesterday, in a dispatch from the National Assembly, the MP was replaced by his Rongo colleague Paul Abuor.
Salasya was appointed on October 27, 2022 after the last General Election.
Changes were triggered by concerns raised by National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah regarding non-participation of some legislators in their respective committees.
Yesterday, Abuor thanked the Opposition leadership for the appointment.
“I thank Leader of Minority Opiyo Wandayi and Chief Whip Junet Mohammed for appointing me to the House Committee,” he said.
Meanwhile the National government has assured small business operators that they will not be affected should Parliament approve the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes (Critical information Infrastructure and Cybercrimes Management) Regulations 2024.
Interior PS Raymond Omollo, appearing before the National Assembly Delegated Legislation Committee yesterday, explained that the new regulations seek to ensure businesses run without fear of attacks.
“We have made it possible for small operators to continue doing their work without being worried at how the big multinationals are operating,” the PS said.
The PS further explained that adequate public participation had been conducted before the regulations were crafted.
He clarified that the team that drafted them visited about five countries including Israel, US, UK, Australia and India as well as engaged Google and Microsoft.
Committee chairperson and Ainabkoi MP Samuel Chepkonga said they want to be satisfied that sufficient public participation was carried out to avoid such matters from being taken to court.
He also thanked Leader of Majority Kimani Ichung’wa for playing a lead role in his appointment.
“I want to extend my sincere appreciation to Ichung’wah for confirmation of my approval to the House Committee,” he said.
