Sakaja calls on Nairobi residents to report illegal dumping as unclogging works continue
Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja has called on residents to refrain from engaging in illegal dumping and encouraged them to report any such cases to the appropriate authorities.
In a statement posted on his social media account, Sakaja announced that instances of illegal dumping can be reported by sending an SMS to the number 1508.
Sakaja commends Nairobi Green army
Sakaja commended the efforts of the Green Army, Sub County Administration, and the Disaster Management teams that are actively engaged in various sub-counties to clear blocked drainage systems in flood-prone areas.
“I must salute the Green Army, Sub County Admin and our Disaster Mgt teams for their continued work. Thanks to the concerted efforts in unclogging drainage in the sub-counties, many areas that are prone to flooding during rains have not flooded this time,” he revealed.
Sakaja encouraged residents to continue to stay safe and assured the public that the reported areas of concern are being actively addressed.
“As they continue with this work, please let’s stay safe, avoid illegal dumping and report any incidents to us to 1508. We continue to work on the few areas reported,” he added.
Nairobi County preps
In September, Nairobi City County introduced its preparedness plan for El Nino, which involved the recruitment of 3,500 new personnel to aid in the maintenance of the city.
These teams were responsible for daily cleaning efforts, which included clearing and cleaning drainage systems, as well as the collection of waste, among other activities aimed at preserving the city’s cleanliness.
Sakaja highlighted that the county had devised contingency plans to mitigate the potentially harmful consequences of the above-average rainfall, which could lead to flooding.
Sakaja further emphasized that the timely clearing of drainage systems is crucial to ensure the smooth flow of water, preventing blockages and reducing the risk of flooding.
He also noted that all county sectors in the 17 sub-counties would be collaborating with sub-county administrators to restore Nairobi to its former brilliance.
Additionally, the county’s Environment sector identified areas prone to flooding and deployed an efficient team to clear the obstructed drainage systems in these disaster hotspot areas.
