Deputy President William Ruto on Tuesday visited the school in Kakamega where 14 pupils lost their lives in a stampede.
Ruto was accompanied by Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha and Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang.
Magoha ordered the school to be closed to pave way for investigations.
“Education CS George Magoha this morning led an inter-agency Government team to launch counseling sessions at tragedy-hit Kakamega primary school,” said the education ministry.
What happened?
According to preliminary investigations by police, the stampede happened on Wednesday at 5pm when the bell to go home rang and some children in the upper floors of the classrooms ran frantically downstairs but fell piling on each other.
Children in the classrooms were frightened on seeing their colleagues falling which prompted them to jump from as high as three floors to the ground.
Of the 39 pupils who were taken to Kakamega Referral Hospital, two are in the Intensive Care Unit(ICU) and two are in wards.
The rest 35 are being treated for injuries and suffocation.
