President William Ruto has announced plans to build a museum in Nyandarua county as part of the Kenya Kwanza government’s plan to honour Mau Mau freedom fighters who contributed immensely to Kenya’s struggle for Independence.
Speaking during the burial service of freedom fighter Dedan Kimathi’s widow Mukami Kimathi in Njabini on Saturday, May 13, 2023, the President said the government has set aside at least Ksh50 million for the project.
“Museum ile mmeuliza hapa Nyandarua, tayari tumeweka shillingi millioni hamsini. Vile vile pale Uhuru Gardens museum, kuna sehemu ya watu wa Mau Mau ili tuwakumbuke kwa mchango wenu wa kukomboa nchi yetu ya Kenya,” the president stated.
At the same time, Ruto promised to look for Kimathi’s remains and accord him a befitting send off.
Kimathi was executed on February 18, 1957, by British soldiers through hanging, and afterward the colonialists dumped his body in an unmarked grave at the Kamiti Maximum Security Prison.
The president stated that it was unfortunate that Mukami Kimathi who died on May 4 at the age of 96 left before she was able to see the remains of her husband.
For the last six decades of her life she urged authorities to locate her husband’s remains without success.
“The last wish of Mama Mukami was that she would like the body of her husband to be exhumed from where it was buried in Kamiti prison and interred together with hers next to each other at their home in Njabini this was her wish,” Raila Odinga stated.
