Ruto promises free coxswain training, boats for Coastal Region youth

President William Ruto has promised that the government will train coxswains to prepare them for deep-sea fishing in the Indian Ocean.

The president made this promise while in Nyali, Mombasa County, where he officially opened the Pwani School for the Mentally Challenged tuition block and laid the foundation stone for the Nyali Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) centre.

In his address, he said plans were underway to roll out coxswain training, which would equip youth with the knowledge to steer boats and coordinate the power and rhythm of the rowers.

The head of state explained that the aim of training the youth is to boost the blue economy and fishing. He noted that there will be no charges for the training.

“Kwa vijana wetu wa pwani hapa, tumeeka mpango kamili ya kuhakisha tumewapatia training wale coxswains watatusaida kwa uchumi samawati na uvuvi. Serekali imetoa mpango ya kuwatapia training free of charge. Kila kijana atasomeshwa bila kulipishwa pesa yoyote,” (For our coastal youth here, we have a complete plan to ensure we provide training for coxswains who will help us with the blue economy and fishing. The government has arranged for free training. Every youth will be educated without any charges) he announced.

The president also revealed that the government will buy 25 boats that will be used by the youth for deep-sea fishing.

He said the move would help the youth earn a living as well as improve food security and the coastal economy.

“Tumekubaliana vile vile, tunanunua boti 25 mpya tupatie hawa vijana waweze kufanya deep sea fishing, watuletee samaki, wajiongezee mapato, tupate chakula na tuzalishe uchumi wa Pwani,” (We have also agreed to buy 25 new boats for these youth to enable them to do deep-sea fishing, bring us fish, increase their income, provide food, and boost the coastal economy) he added.
