Ruto nominates new Registrar of Political Parties
By Arnold Ngure, August 15, 2025President William Ruto has nominated former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) official John Cox Lorionokou to be considered as the registrar of political parties.
In a statement on Friday, August 15, 2025, State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed indicated that Ruto has also named Agatha Wanjiku Wahome as the deputy registrar of political parties.
“President William Ruto, in line with his constitutional mandate, and acting on the recommendations of the Public Service Commission, has today made the following nominations in the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties: John Cox Lorionokou – Registrar of Political Parties and Agatha Wanjiku Wahome – Assistant Registrar of Political Parties,” he said.
Successful candidates
The nominations come just a week after the Public Service Commission shortlisted 10 candidates for the position of registrar of political parties on August 6, 2025.
In a notice to the public on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, the Public Service Commission (PSC) shortlisted Ali Abdullahi Surraw, Sophia Kaindi Sitati Muchangi, Geoffrey Obonyo (PWD), Everlyne Cherotich Koiyan, Aloyce Peter Ndege, Mercy Kalondu Wambua, OGW, Manana W. E. Rodgers, Rahma Adan Jillo, Lorionokou John Cox, and Florence Tabu Birya.

PSC had equally shortlisted 10 more candidates for the position of deputy registrar of political parties.
Among those shortlisted were Seth Odhiambo Onyango, Josphine Kirion Eregae, Simon Owawa Nyamolo (PWD), Chebett Koske, Julius Cheche, Peter Mutui, Agatha Wanjiku Wahome, Mohamed Abdullahi Abdi, Robert Psakit Borter, and Gilbert Wiliam Opanga.
Qualification criteria
Applicants for this position were required to have at least 15 years of experience in fields such as political science, public administration, law, governance, finance, or management were encouraged to apply.

The applicants were equally urged to be compliant with Chapter Six of the Constitution and demonstrate high moral standards.
The Assistant Registrar, who will deputise the Registrar, requires similar qualifications but with at least 10 years of relevant experience in fields such as political science, public administration, law, governance, finance, or management.
The interviews were conducted on Monday, August 11, 2025, before the names of successful candidates were forwarded to President Ruto for nomination.
If approved by the National Assembly, Lorionokou and Agatha Wanjiku will serve for a period of six years.
Former Registrar of Political Parties Ann Nderitu left the position to become a commissioner of the IEBC.
