Ruto launches construction of Ksh365 million market in Vihiga

President William Ruto on Wednesday, January 22, 2024, launched the construction of Luanda Modern Market in Vihiga county.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki in a statement shared via his official X account revealed that the market will cost Ksh365 million to construct.

Once completed and operational, Kindiki says the market will accommodate more than 1,000 traders, and will include among other amenities, cold rooms and storage facilities to curb wastage of farm produce.

This, the second in command says, will enable farmers and traders to fetch favourable prices.

Construction of 400 markets

Kindiki further noted that the government is currently constructing over 400 safe and secure modern markets across the country where traders, farmers and customers can transact in dignity.

‘To turnaround the economic fortunes of our people, the Government is constructing over 400 safe and secure modern markets across the Country where traders, farmers and customers can transact in dignity. One such market is the Luanda Modern Market in Vihiga County, whose construction at a cost of Ksh. 365 million was launched by President William Samoei Ruto.

“Luanda Modern Market, once completed and operational, will accommodate more than 1,000 traders. It will include among other amenities, cold rooms and storage facilities to curb wastage of farm produce and enable farmers and traders fetch favourable prices,” Kindiki stated.

Ruto’s Western tour

President Ruto has been on a development tour of the Western region which entered its fourth day on Wednesday, January 22, on which he launched various projects across Vihiga, Busia, and Kakamega counties.

In Kakamega, the head of state laid the foundation stone for Khwisero Level IV Hospital in Khwisero sub-county.

Prior to his tour of Khwisero, Ruto was in Busia where he launched the extension of a secondary dyke for River Nzoia flood control project in Budalang’i.

Taking to his official X account on Wednesday, January 22, 2024, shortly after the launch, Ruto announced that the project will address lake backflow and restore arable agricultural land, thereby enabling residents to engage in productive activities.

Some of the institutions and infrastructure that Ruto said will benefit from the project are Musoma Primary and Secondary Schools, Mau Mau Trading Centre, Musoma Shopping Centre, and households currently at risk of displacement.

“The government is investing more than Ksh130 million to extend the dyke in Budalang’i to address lake backflow and restore arable agricultural land, thereby enabling residents to engage in productive activities. The project will also safeguard and restore access to vital institutions and infrastructure, including Musoma Primary and Secondary Schools, Mau Mau Trading Centre, Musoma Shopping Centre, and households currently at risk of displacement,” President Ruto stated.

Ruto also broke ground for the construction of a tuition block for St Anne’s Bunyala Girls Secondary School and St Joseph’s Busagwa Primary School.
