Ruto appoints former Bumula MP Mwambu Mabonga EPRA chairperson

President William Samoei Ruto has appointed former Bumula Member of Parliament Moses Wekesa Mwambu Mabonga as the new non-executive chairperson of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

The official state appointment was formally published in the Kenya Gazette on Friday, July 24, 2026, under Section 12 (1) (a) of the Energy Act and Section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act.

According to the notice signed by President Ruto, Mabonga will serve in the position for a period of three years, effective July 24, 2026, officially revoking Gazette Notice No. 7850 of 2025.

“I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint MOSES WEKESA MWAMBU MABONGA to be the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority, for a period of three (3) years,” the gazette notice read.

Following the announcement, Mabonga formally accepted the appointment, expressing deep gratitude to President Ruto for placing confidence in his ability to lead the energy regulator. He noted that he does not take the opportunity for granted and promised to serve the public faithfully.

“To my family, friends, colleagues, and everyone who has walked this journey with me, thank you for your encouragement, prayers, and steadfast support. I remain committed to serving our country faithfully and to making a meaningful contribution to the realisation of Kenya’s development agenda. God bless Kenya.”

Outlining his goals for the agency, the former lawmaker pledged to uphold integrity, diligence, and professionalism in line with the Constitution. He emphasised his commitment to working closely with the EPRA Board, management, and industry stakeholders to strengthen the nation’s energy and petroleum sectors in alignment with Kenya’s broader economic agenda.

“I fully appreciate the responsibility that comes with this office and pledge to serve with integrity, diligence, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to the Constitution and the people of Kenya.”

In his closing statement, Mabonga extended his appreciation to his family, friends, and supporters for their continuous prayers and encouragement, reaffirming his dedication to making a positive contribution to national development.
