The Luo Council of Elders have weighed in on poor voter turnout in  Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga’s backyard asking eligible voters to register for elections.

Ker Luo Opiyo Otondi expressed concern  that thousands of eligible youth were yet to register for elections with less than a week remaining to end the vital exercise.

“I wonder why young people have suddenly become apathetic towards elections and I am asking all leaders now to come out and sweet talk them to register.’’

“How will they make Raila Odinga president if they can’t go for voter’s cards. Their dreams would be a mirage,’’ he claimed and asked all youth to register.

Otondi was speaking at his home when he met Kisumu Community Professionals led by 14 professors from various universities to chart the community’s future.

The professors included, Prof Gordon Wayumba of Technical University of Kenya and Prof Billy Kariaga of Moi University.

He told the professionals in his Nyahera home to play a lead role in educating the young people on the importance of participating in elections.

The patron of Kisumu Community Gordon Kaoko also weighed in on the mater asking the youth not to take elections for granted.

“Some people don’t know it’s their democratic right to vote. Others think they must be paid to vote or they are doing it to benefit others. That’s wrong,’’he said

He told the eligible voters to shed off such ‘fatalistic mentality’ reminding them that through the ballot, they are able to elect accountable and credible leaders.
