Raila’s casket placed under tight security during public viewing at Kasarani Stadium
By Mabonga Makhanu, October 16, 2025Raila Odinga’s casket is currently under heavy security as the public flocks to Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, to view the body of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
The casket is surrounded by a contingent of General Service Unit (GSU) officers and military personnel, with only a small space left for mourners to pass through and view the body.
Initially, the body was placed at the VIP lounge in the stadium, where President William Ruto led the viewing. A red carpet had been laid out for top government officials as the body was displayed with full military honours.

However, the body has since been moved from the VIP section to the main field, where thousands of Raila’s supporters are now viewing it.
Earlier, the stadium was thrown into chaos upon the arrival of Raila Odinga’s body, leading to a confrontation between the police and his supporters. The commotion resulted in the deaths of two people before order was restored.

The viewing resumed shortly after, with the President leading the procession, followed by Raila’s family members, and later, former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The public viewing was initially scheduled to take place at Parliament Buildings, but due to the overwhelming number of supporters and security challenges, it was relocated to Kasarani Stadium.
The late former Prime Minister, who passed away in India a day ago, was dressed in a suit with an orange scarf draped around his neck – a symbolic representation of his signature ODM look that he often wore during rallies.
Raila’s funeral itinerary
After the viewing, Raila’s body will be returned to Lee Funeral Home before being taken to Nyayo Stadium on Friday for the State Funeral Service. It will then spend the night at his Karen residence before being airlifted to Kisumu on Saturday, October 18, 2025, for a public viewing at Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Mamboleo.
From there, the body will proceed to his home in Opoda farm in Bondo for burial on Sunday, October 19, 2025.

According to his elder brother, Oburu Odinga, the burial will be a private ceremony held at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST), with only a select few allowed to access the burial site in Kang’o ka Jaramogi,.
