Raila Odinga Stadium set to host Madaraka Day celebrations
By Print Reporter, May 17, 2025Newly refurbished Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay County is ready to host the 61st Madaraka Day celebrations on June 1, marking a major milestone in the government’s commitment to regional development through sports infrastructure.
Construction of the 12,000-seater stadium which began five months ago is now complete with handover expected this coming week.
The project delivers on President William Ruto’s pledge to transform the facility into a modern sporting arena for the people of Homa Bay.
During an inspection tour led by Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya and National Steering Committee for Celebrations Chairperson and Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, the stadium was declared fit to host the national fete.
CS Mvurya hailed the rapid progress, terming the stadium a key driver for sports and talent growth in the region long after the celebrations.
Local leaders, led by Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, welcomed the progress, noting that the development extended beyond the stadium to other infrastructure projects spearheaded by various government ministries in the area.
“The stadium symbolises unity and shared prosperity championed by President Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga,” said CS Mvurya, who was flanked by several Principal Secretaries and senior government officials.
Also present were Sports PS Elijah Mwangi, Blue Economy PS Betsy Njagi, Culture and Heritage PS Ummi Bashir, Creative Economy PS Dennis Itumbi, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma, Sports Kenya CEO Gabriel Komora and members of the National Celebrations Committee.
