Raila donates Ksh1M to 52 churches in Nyanza

Suna East Member of Parliament (MP) Junet Mohamed has revealed that former Prime Minister Raila Odinga donated Ksh1 million in support of 52 churches drawn from across the Nyanza region.

Speaking during an interdenominational prayer service held on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at Kadika Primary School in Suna East Constituency, an event attended by President William Ruto, Junet said a committee had been formed in Nairobi to help mobilise funds for the churches, which had united under a common initiative.

According to him, the committee successfully raised Ksh8.5 million through the support of various leaders and well-wishers.

“The money we managed to raise from that group in Nairobi is Ksh 8.5 million,” Junet disclosed.

He went on to list the key contributors: Deputy President Kithure Kindiki (Ksh2 million), National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula (Ksh1 million), and Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah (Ksh1 million).

Other donors included former Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho (Ksh1 million), Migori Governor Ochillo Ayacko (Ksh1 million), Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga (Ksh1 million), and Kisumu-based businessman Kennedy Ong’eno, who gave Ksh500,000.

“We had made a committee for the 52 churches that we brought together, and the committee managed to raise this money in Nairobi. We visited Deputy President Kiture Kindiki and he gave us Ksh two million; we went to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, and he gave us Ksh one million; the Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetangu’la, gave us Ksh one million; Kimani Ichung’wa, the majority leader in the National Assembly, gave us Ksh one million,” Junet stated.

“Hassan Joho gave us Ksh1 million, Governor Ochillo Oyako gave us Ksh1 million, the governor of Homa Bay, Gladys Wanga, gave us Ksh1 million, a businessman in Kisumu called Kennedy Ong’eno gave us Ksh500,000.”

Ruto’s church donation

Junet further urged Ruto not to be discouraged by critics who question his contributions to churches, emphasising that the church community values his support. He also encouraged local leaders present to make their contributions, noting that those from Nairobi had already played their part.

Ruto’s Migori itinerary

The head of state will subsequently preside over the launch of the Kehancha Affordable Housing Project in Kuria West.

On Monday, May 5, 2025, the President will visit Rongo for an inspection tour of the Kosir ESP market and the unveiling of buildings at Rongo Comprehensive School, Kosir, and Rongo Town.

While in Awendo, Ruto will launch the construction of Awendo Animal Health Training Institute, Alara Nyambija in North Sakwa, and head to Uriri for the inspection of ESP Market and issuance of a school bus to St. Pius Uriri High School, Oria Market in North Kanyamkago.

He will later head to Nyatike to launch construction of Muhuru Bay Pier, inspect Muhuru modern market and unveil the contractor for Muhuru-Masara Road.

Ruto is expected to conclude his tour on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, with a tour of Kuria East, where he will inspect Ntimaru ESP Market and Affordable Housing Project and preside over the issuance of a school bus to Gokeharaka Secondary School in Ntimaru Town.
