PS Sing’oei adds voice to growing term limit debate
Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei has added his voice to oppose the ongoing calls to extend the presidential term limit.
While emphasizing the importance of upholding constitutional and political framework, Sing’oei said extending presidential term beyond the two terms provided for by the constitution is incompatible with the country’s democratic principles.
According to the PS, any efforts to subvert the constitutional order through regime change, regardless of the guise, should not be tolerated.
“Third termism is incompatible with our constitutional and political order. So is regime change in all its guises. Both mustn’t be tolerated,” said Sing’oei.
His statement comes at a time when a section of President William Ruto’s lieutenants sought to push for the extension of his rule beyond the two five-year terms stipulated in law.
On Sunday, Tiaty MP William Kamket chided those bashing Ruto’s administration threatening to push for reforms to extend his term to 24 years that former President Moi ruled.
The second time lawmaker scoffed at those downplaying Kenya Kwanza government’s achievements insisting Ruto’s victory in the last general election was the will of the people.
While exuding confidence that the Ruto will rule for a second term despite sharp criticism from certain quarters, the Tiaty lawmaker hinted at a possible presidential term extension for Ruto.
“People should stop the pride. The second term you will be elected, and you will bounce back like electricity. You are a President rightfully elected, sit on that seat well,” Kamket said.
Kamket, a native of Baringo county—the birthplace of Moi, instead castigated those accusing the government of State-sponsored abductions.
Without tabling any evidence, Kamket led an attack on Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya accusing him of abetting extra-judicial killings in the previous regime and fuelling the unending insecurity in Kerio Valley.
“If they joke, you know I come from the county of 24 years. Baringo county, we know about 24 years. If they joke, we can tell you to extend past the two terms,” he said.
The Tiaty MP instead, lauded the government for silencing the guns in the North Rift that has been a troubled region since the Kanu era by putting in place requisite measures to restore normalcy.
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna hit at Kamket over his remarks, saying the President’s men know the gig is up and nothing can be done to change his fortunes in 2027.
“All that chest thumping from Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi and Kamket are attempts to mask the fact that they have accepted his fate,” said Sifuna.
