The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has urged the Education Ministry to provide teachers with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and among other ‘supportive measures’

In a letter to the Education Cabinet Secretary dated May 8, the union Secretary General Wilson Sossion said teachers needed to be motivated as the State plans to reopen schools.

“Teachers being a fundamental condition for guaranteeing quality education, their safety and well being should be of prime concern, they should be adequately motivated, empowered, supplied with Personal Protective Equipment(PPE), and moreover, they should be resourced,” said Mr. Sossion.

Mr Sossion further urged the Ministry in joint with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to improve the professionalism of teachers especially during the COVID-19 period.

Also, Mr. Sossion called for concerted efforts from schools management boards, religious organizations and Parents Association (PA) to make learning institutions Covid-19 free.

Besides, Sossion made a set of demands as follows;

  • Each school to have a technical team of members drawn from BOM, PAs, KNUT, Head Teacher Associations and religious groups.
  • Fumigation of schools before resumption of classes.
  • Daily screening of all the people in schools.
  • School staff to be trained on health regulations against Covid-19.
  • Quality assurance officers to inspect schools compliance to health measures.
  • Teachers to have PPEs.
  • Activation of school feeding program.
  • Special needs children be accorded prefential treatment.
  • Schools converted into quarantine centers be vacated and reverted to their original status, and among others.
