The Kenya Wildlife Service(KWS) in Naivasha is on the spot following the brutal attack  of a Naivasha Water and Sewerage Company (Naivawasco) staff by a hippopotamus.

Francis Wachira, 46, was on Friday last week attacked by the hippo while on duty at the sewerage treatment plant and was taken to Kijabe Hospital where he succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment.

According to Antony Njogu, a colleague of the deceased,Wachira was attacked at midday while on his way to the station after winding up his assignment at the facility.

KWS officers who came to calm the angry staff on Monday at the scene, were sent away after failing to give a satisfactory explanation as to why they have failed to relocate the animals after they trespassed into the sewerage plant, despite several appeals dating back to 2020.

However, the officers who declined to be named said the issue had been escalated to the relevant authorities and would be dealt with as soon as possible.

Lakeview MCA Alex Mbugua urged KWS to move the animals that have caused havoc in the area to avert more attacks in future.

Viwandani MCA Muraya Mwangi who gave an ultimatum to KWS to relocate the hippos, failure to which they would do it themselves.
