Principals threaten not to allow Bungoma students

Parents whose children were awarded Bungoma county scholarships were in panic mode after several schools demanded they clear annual school fees.
Principals have vowed not to readmit students after the half-term break without school fees. The county government is yet to submit school fees for the over 7,000 students enlisted in the programme and joined Form One recently.
In a letter dated April 18 written by the Chief Officer in charge of Education and Vocational Training Rose Murunga addressed to the Chief officer Finance and seen by People Daily, the former admits that the money available is not enough to fund the programme.
“Though his excellency awarded 7,000 students the scholarships to join Form One in addition to the continuing 4,500 (students), a total of Sh444 million is required yet we have only Sh60 million,” the letter reads in part.
She requested the Chief Finance Officer to give the way forward on the matter because the pressure was piling up from schools.
The County Assembly of Bungoma on the other hand has summoned the Education Executive Dr Betty Mayeku at least on three occasions to address the issue but she has turned down the summons.
The Assembly Committee on Budget and Appropriations has blamed the executive led by Governor Wycliffe Wangamati for the skewed implementation of the County Government scholarship.
