Government Chief Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor has confirmed that the late Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were met his untimely death due to multiple severe internal injuries inflicted by gunshots.

Addressing the press following the conclusion of the postmortem examination on Monday, May 5, 2025, Oduor stated that the deceased was shot five times.

The bullets caused serious injuries to the heart, liver, and aorta. The chief pathologist made it clear that Charles Were could not survive, as one of the bullets was further lodged in the spine.

In what could also help the investigators recover the murder weapon, Oduor revealed that they had taken a sample of the bullet, which was found lodged in the Were’s body, for further ballistic analysis.

“Charles was shot a total of five times. There were two entry gunshot wounds on the left forearm, with one bullet lodging in the same forearm and one exited,” Johansen Oduor explained.

“There were two entry bullet wounds on the right side of the chest, with an exit on the right side, but one lodged in the spine. Then there was a bullet track on the back with the entry on the upper part of the back with the bullet lodged in the upper part of the upper back, which we took samples for ballistic analysis,” he further detailed.

“Further to that, we found that there were much more internal injuries in the vital organs, so the bullet struck the heart, the liver, and the aorta, meaning that the late could not survive injuries caused by the gunshots,” he added.

He, however, made it clear that there were no other physical injuries on Charles Were’s body.

The postmortem was witnessed by family lawyers, among them Apollo Mboya and Peter Kopere, and senior homicide officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), led by Head of Homicide Martin Nyuguto.

Arrests

A preliminary report from DCI indicated that the attack was premeditated, arguing that the shooter trailed the deceased from parliament before pulling the trigger along Ngong Road.

Police have arrested four suspects in connection with the fatal shooting. The NPS further stated that investigators identified ties between some of the arrested individuals and the ‘Mjahidin’ gang, which is suspected of involvement in a series of armed robberies in Nairobi’s Eastlands area.

Security officers further indicated that one of the suspects was a police officer. The four were presented in court on Monday, May 5, 2025, and detectives requested more days to investigate the incident.
