Police calls for calm as investigation into Nandi helicopter crash continues
The National Police Service has given assurances to Kenyans amid ongoing investigations into the helicopter crash in Nandi County that killed six people, including Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno.
The crash occurred on February 28, 2026, in the Chepkiep area of Mosop Sub-County, claiming the lives of the MP and five others.
In a press statement issued on March 1, 2026, the Inspector-General of Police expressed condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the victims, both on behalf of the service and personally.
Investigation department leads probe
Following standard operating procedures and in accordance with international civil aviation guidelines, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Department (AAID) has formally taken over management of the investigation.
“In accordance with standard operating procedures and international civil aviation guidelines, the management of the investigation into the cause of the accident has formally been taken over by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Department.Officers from the National Police Service remain at the scene to secure the area and provide the requisite support to the aircraft accident investigators,” the statement said.

Supported by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), the AAID is leading technical and forensic examinations to determine the cause of the crash.
Key elements such as GPS tracking devices, maintenance logs, onboard instruments, and other flight equipment have already been recovered and are undergoing detailed analysis. The police emphasised that the investigation is independent, professional, and focused on establishing the facts.
Calm amid ongoing probe
National Police Service officers continue to secure the crash site, providing logistical and security support to the AAID. The Inspector-General appealed to the public to remain calm and avoid speculation while the investigation proceeds.
“We appeal to the public to remain calm as investigations continue,” the statement read. Further updates will be issued solely by the AAID to ensure accurate information reaches the public.
The assurance comes as the nation mourns Ng’eno, a three-term legislator known for his advocacy on land rights, forest evictions, and community development.
The helicopter, an Airbus H125 with registration 5Y-DSB, reportedly attempted takeoff after a weather-related stop amid mist and rain. By entrusting the investigation to aviation specialists and maintaining a secured scene, the National Police Service aims to uphold public confidence and provide closure to the bereaved families.
