Police seize cannabis after accident exposes drug trafficking attempt in Miwani
By Sharon Atieno, June 8, 2026Police have seized a consignment of cannabis sativa after a road traffic accident in Miwani exposed what is suspected to be a drug trafficking attempt along the Chemelil–Miwani–Kisumu road.
In a statement shared on its X account on Monday, June 8, 2026, the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) said officers responded to the crash at Ombeyi Junction on June 7, 2026, where a vehicle had veered off the road and landed in a ditch.
Vehicle overturns, occupants flee
According to police, the accident involved a white Mazda CX-5, which rolled off the road before members of the public rushed to rescue the occupants.
“Members of the public had rescued the occupants before informing the police. However, by the time officers arrived, the occupants had fled the scene,” the statement said.
A search conducted at the scene later revealed that the vehicle was carrying narcotics.

Cannabis recovered
Police confirmed that cannabis sativa was recovered and secured as an exhibit, while the vehicle was towed to Miwani Police Station for further investigations.
“A thorough search and processing of the accident scene revealed that the vehicle was transporting cannabis sativa. The narcotics were recovered and secured as exhibits,” the statement added.

Public vigilance urged
The NPSC praised members of the public for quickly reporting the incident, saying their cooperation was key in securing the scene and aiding investigations.
Police said investigations into the incident are ongoing as they intensify efforts to dismantle narcotics trafficking networks and enhance safety along major transport routes.
