Police have recovered approximately 14.1 kilograms of suspected cannabis during a patrol in Busia County, as the National Police Service (NPS) continues operations targeting the trafficking and distribution of narcotic drugs.

According to a statement shared by the NPS on X on Sunday, June 28, 2026, officers from Busia Police Station recovered the drugs after acting on information from a member of the public during routine patrols in the Busia Central Business District.

“The National Police Service continues to intensify efforts to combat the trafficking and distribution of narcotic drugs through sustained patrols, intelligence-led operations, and strong collaboration with members of the public,” the NPS statement read in part.

Police said officers responded to a report of an unattended sack that had been left at the Busia Bus Stage by an unidentified boda boda operator.

A search of the package led to the recovery of nine parcels of suspected cannabis weighing about 14.1 kilograms. The parcels were wrapped in yellow cellotape.

The NPS said the recovery was made through continued patrols, intelligence-led operations and cooperation with members of the public. Investigations are underway to establish the source of the drugs, identify those involved and determine the intended destination of the consignment.

The service also encouraged members of the public to continue sharing information on presumed criminal activities through its reporting channels.

On June 20, 2026, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) announced the arrest of five persons of interest during operations conducted in Mombasa, Kitengela and Busia.

In Mombasa, detectives intercepted a lorry transporting nine sacks of cannabis sativa weighing 450 kilograms. The consignment was estimated to have a street value of Ksh12.15 million.

Police arrested the driver and another person of interest at the scene before impounding the vehicle.

In Kitengela, detectives raided Honey Pot Bar, where they recovered two bales of cannabis sativa, 16 rolls of bhang and additional quantities packed in a zip-lock bag. One person of interest was arrested during the operation.

Earlier operations in Busia also led to the interception of a vehicle at Butula Mission carrying two sacks of suspected cannabis and the arrest of its occupants.

Investigations ongoing

The DCI said the recent operations form part of ongoing efforts to disrupt narcotics trafficking networks operating in different parts of the country.

“The crackdown continues as law enforcement agencies turn up the heat on drug traffickers,” the agency said after the earlier operations.

Police said suspects arrested in the previous operations remain in custody pending arraignment.

The latest Busia seizure adds to the ongoing investigations as authorities seek to trace the origin of the recovered drugs and identify those responsible for transporting the consignment. The National Police Service said operations against narcotics trafficking will continue as investigations progress.
