Police recover 77 stolen cows in Meru operation

The National Police Service (NPS), in a statement issued on the night of Saturday, April 11, 2026, described the operation as a major breakthrough in the fight against stock theft.
According to the NPS, the operation was launched following a tip-off from members of the public who reported that a large herd of stolen cows was being driven toward the Kachiuru area by suspected bandits.
“A coordinated multi-agency response, supported by actionable information from the public, has culminated in the successful recovery of stolen livestock in Meru County,” NPS stated.
“Officers from the National Police Service (NPS) received a report indicating that seventy-seven (77) cows had been stolen by suspected bandits and were being driven towards the Kachiuru area.”
Multi-agency response
Acting on the intelligence, officers drawn from multiple security agencies were quickly mobilised to intercept the suspects. The team managed to track down the group and recover all 77 stolen cows before they could be moved further.
Police did not immediately confirm whether any arrests were made during the operation, but indicated that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those behind the theft.
“Acting on this information, a multi-agency security team was immediately deployed and managed to intercept the suspects and recover all 77 stolen cows, marking a significant success in the operation,” the statement read in part.
“Security teams have intensified operations in the area to deter stock theft and to ensure that peace and security is maintained.”

Authorities credited members of the public for providing timely and actionable information that made the recovery possible.
“The National Police Service appreciates the close cooperation between the public and security agencies in combating banditry and cattle rustling, and further reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding communities,” the NPS said in a statement.
Residents have been encouraged to continue sharing information on suspicious activities to help curb crime in the region.
