Disarmament is an ongoing process

The National Police Service has said that recovery of the illegal firearms is a crucial step in the journey towards the elimination of banditry and cattle rustling that has been rampant in the area. The service has linked these acts of banditry and cattle rustling as the main elements of the lack of peace and security in the areas.

“The recovery of these weapons represents a critical step in disrupting banditry, cattle rustling, and other violent crimes that have long threatened the safety and livelihoods of local communities,” NPS added.

Recovery will help in stabilising peace

The National Police Service has also confirmed to be working alongside other security agencies, reaffirming its determination to maintain pressure against the possession and use of illicit weapons and against banditry.

The National Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to continuing the disarmament exercise through peaceful means and community engagement, while enhancing patrols and intelligence-led operations to ensure lasting peace and security in the areas.

Police say the ongoing program targets long-term peace and stability, emphasising that community cooperation is key to reducing arms-related violence and securing livelihoods in the valley. They have called on members of the public with illegal firearms to surrender, and called on those with helpful information on those who may be owning the rifles illegally to make a report to the police for action.
