Police officers arrested in Ksh80,000 extortion saga

Four police officers based in Nairobi were on Sunday evening arrested in Loitoktok for allegedly extorting Sh80,000 from a Tanzanian.
The officers, three based at the Buruburu Police Station and one from Administration Police Uhuru Camp, reportedly arrested the foreigner on Friday in Loitoktok and drove with him to Nairobi where they forced him to withdraw Sh80,000 from his account.
They went back to Loitoktok on another mission and stopped at a Shell Petrol Station along the Loitoktok-Emali Road.
Acting on a tip off, officers from Loitoktok Police Station approached them but they sped off towards Loitoktok airstrip in two vehicles, prompting a chase.
Upon arrest, it was discovered that the four were Corporal Geoffrey Mwongela, Constable Alex Katana and Constable Kelvin Njuguna, all from Buruburu Police Station. The fourth officer was identified as Constable Tony Kororia of AP’s Critical Infrastructure Police Unit (CIPU).
Also arrested was David Mutua Matiti of Masinga area while another unidentified man escaped from the scene.
Police said the suspects were in civilian clothes and had with them one full set of police uniform, a pair of handcuffs and police communication gadget whose serial number had been obliterated.
Barely a week ago, officers from Kileleshwa Police Station were accused of arresting two foreigners on trumped up charges and extorting Sh50,000 from them.
