Police nab one in narcotic crackdown

The National Police Service (NPS) said the crackdown followed a critical tip-off and highlighted the proactive steps taken by officers to curb narcotics distribution in the area.
“Acting on a tip-off, police officers from Awendo Police Station yesterday conducted a crackdown on narcotics along the Migori-Kisii road,” read the NPS post dated September 13, 2025.

Apprehension
According to the NPS statement, officers flagged down a motorcycle with a pillion passenger. The passenger suddenly jumped off and fled into a nearby sugarcane plantation, leaving behind the rider and a suspicious package.
Upon inspection, the package was found to contain several brooms of cannabis sativa, weighing approximately four kilograms. The person of interest was taken into custody and escorted to Awendo Police Station, where the confiscated cannabis was secured as an exhibit for legal proceedings.
“They spotted an individual riding a motorcycle with one pillion passenger. When flagged down, the passenger jumped off and escaped into a sugarcane plantation, leaving behind the rider and a suspicious package. Upon searching it, the officers found several brooms of cannabis sativa weighing approximately four kilograms,” read the statement.
“The suspect was escorted to the station and placed in custody for processing and arrangement before court, while the exhibit was secured at the same facility.”
The NPS praised the officers’ diligence, reaffirming their commitment to combating drug trafficking and abuse, which continues to threaten public safety.

Operation in Tana River
The Awendo arrest coincided with another enforcement action earlier in Bura, Tana North Sub-County, Tana River County. Police officers on a daytime patrol in Kambi Moto Village apprehended two persons of interest carrying 40 litres of illicit brew, locally known as makole.
The NPS reported that the brew was confiscated and secured as an exhibit. The two individuals remain in custody, awaiting processing and court arraignment. The force acknowledged the officers’ vigilance, emphasising the dangers posed by illicit brews to public health and safety.
The NPS encouraged residents to report suspicious activities at the nearest police stations.
