Police launch probe after student dies in dorm fire
Police have launched investigations after a Form Two student died in a fire that razed down Godoma Secondary School dormitory in Ganze, Kilifi county yesterday.
Addressing journalists yesterday, Kilifi County Commissioner Josphat Biwott said the body of the student was burnt beyond recognition and property of unknown value was destroyed. The fire is said to have broken out at 5 a.m. when students had gone for their morning preps.
“We’ve held a security meeting and some of the issues we have resolved is that we want to get a report from the principal why the deceased student was in the dormitory while the rest had gone for their morning lessons and also there are news that two students were not in school when the incident happened. We have also decided to close the school indefinitely to pave way for investigations,” he said.
He said detectives visited the scene after the incident as part of the investigations to establish the cause of the fire. Biwott said for the last two weeks, Ganze sub-county had experienced a surge in cases of school unrest.“In the past two weeks, students in Ganze sub-county have been burning schools.
As a government, we are not going to accept it anymore, students burning schools must face a date in court. Dealing with indiscipline in schools should be looked at holistically with parents, schools and justice system playing a role,” said Biwott.
