Officers from the National Police Service in Nandi County have seized a large cache of cannabis following a swift operation in Chesumei. The crackdown comes amid growing public concerns about drug trafficking in the region.

On Thursday, August 20, 2025, Kaptel Police Station received a tip-off from members of the public about a vehicle suspected of transporting bhang from Kapsisywo trading centre towards Kaptel. Acting on the intelligence, police officers moved quickly to intercept the suspect.

During the operation, the person of interest, who had alighted from the vehicle, was searched. Officers recovered 22 large stones of Cannabis Sativa, each containing 30 smaller polythene-packaged stones, amounting to a total of 660 cannabis stones.

The person of interest was immediately arrested and escorted, along with the seized exhibits, to Kaptel Police Station for processing and eventual arraignment in court.

The National Police Service has expressed gratitude to members of the public for their timely and crucial cooperation. In a statement, the Service noted, “We appreciate the public’s cooperation and the timely sharing of intelligence,” emphasising the key role citizens play in supporting law enforcement efforts.

This operation highlights the growing use of community intelligence in curbing the illicit drug trade in Nandi County. Police officials noted that residents’ vigilance has been instrumental in identifying and intercepting illegal activities, particularly in remote trading centres where enforcement can be challenging.

Authorities warn that drug trafficking and possession will continue to attract strict legal consequences. The National Police Service reiterated its commitment to tackling cannabis cultivation and trafficking, stating that operations of this nature will be intensified to disrupt organised networks.

The Chesumei crackdown follows similar operations across the country, where law enforcement agencies are increasingly relying on community engagement and intelligence-sharing to prevent the distribution and sale of illegal substances.

Residents in the area have welcomed the police action, describing it as a positive step toward protecting the youth from the harmful effects of drugs. Police urge anyone with additional information on illegal drug activities to report promptly, assuring confidentiality and swift action.

With this seizure, authorities have sent a clear message that Nandi County will not tolerate the illegal drug trade and that joint efforts between law enforcement and the public are crucial to maintaining law and order.
