Police IG Kanja, DCI boss Amin appear in court over whereabouts of 3 missing Kenyans
By Zipporah Ngwatu, July 20, 2026The Inspector General of Police (IG) Douglas Kanja and the Director of the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) Mohamed Amin have appeared before Milimani High Court Judge Alexander Muteti.
Their appearances came after Judge Muteti on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, summoned them for the second time to appear before him today, Monday, July 20, 2026, to explain to the court where three missing Kenyans are.
However, the two police bosses did not take to the dock after the lawyers agreed that the victim’s family should first testify before Kanja and Amin, who are given chances to explain to the court the whereabouts of the three missing persons.
Judge Muteti allowed the request by the lawyers from both sides and allowed Kanja and Amin to leave the court to allow the witnesses to tender their testimonies. The judge also thanked the two for honouring the court summons.
During the previous court proceedings, Lawyer Paul Nyamodi, representing Kanja and Amin, informed the court that his clients could not make it to court in person because the orders for them to appear before Judge Muteti were issued very late and they had a security meeting scheduled the same day.
“My lord, my clients are not present in court in person because they are in a meeting planning for the upcoming security meeting; thus, they could not come,” lawyer Nyamodi told the court.
However, Nyamodi told the court that if the IG and DCI are still required to attend court, the court should assign them another date and time.
Notably, he told the court that the three missing persons, Macmillan Kiarie Mugo, Michael Oloo Osoro and Evans Otieno Omondi, are not in police custody.
“My lord, it is my clients’ position that the three missing persons are not in police custody,” Nyamodi told the court.
“My lord, lastly, without the application before you in all three fields being spent, we hope there will be an opportunity for the respondents to be given time to respond,” Lawyer Nyamodi added.
However, the families’ lawyers, led by Advocate Abner Mango, opposed the state request, insisting that court orders must be obeyed.
They argued that IG Kanja and the DCI Director Amin head agencies with the capacity to trace missing persons and should account for the whereabouts of the three men.
