Police commission meets to shortlist DIG candidates

The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) members are expected to meet today to shortlist at least 10 candidates to be interviewed for the position of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Kenya Police.

The commission is in the process of replacing Edward Mbugua who retired early this month and Abdalla Komesha appointed to act in the position.

The applicants must be holders of a Bachelor’s degree, be a Kenyan citizen and must have served in the service for at least 15 years and be of rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police and above.

Among those who have applied include Komesha, the Director of Disaster Management at the police headquarters Duncan Ochieng, Nyale Munga and Kiprono Langat among others.

DIG is a senior officer in charge of over 70,000 of the 120,000 officers of the National Police Service (NPS).

The holder is also incharge of the General Service Unit (GSU), Traffic department, eight regional commanders, 47 county commanders, Sub-County Commanders, Officer Commanding Station (OCS) and all uniformed officers.

The commission is also in the process of recruiting the chief executive and has shortlisted eight candidates for the position.

Among those interviewed on March 21 were Dr Silas Mc’Opiyo who is the acting CEO and a former senior police officer, Humphrey Nakitare, Adhan Berhe, Christine Rotich, Janet Mucheru, Kennedy Mulunda, Nura Huka, Peter Leley and Justa Kiura.

The position attracted a total of 92 applicants from different parts of the country but only nine applicants were shortlisted.

Members of the public were requested to submit any information relating to the applicants through a written memorandum or online so as to be received on or before March 24.
