Police bust cargo of bhang hidden in Lamu-bound PSV bus

By , October 5, 2025

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) sleuths intercepted a cargo of cannabis sativa stashed between a pile of second-hand clothes in a Lamu-bound PSV bus.

According to the NPS, the exhibits were discovered at Malindi’s Sabaki Bridge after the bus was flagged down for a routine inspection on Sunday, October 5, 2025.

“A multi-agency team at the Sabaki River Bridge in Malindi has intercepted a Lamu-bound bus and uncovered a stash of cannabis cleverly hidden in plain sight in the luggage compartment,” police confirmed.

In a surprising twist, a passenger believed to be the owner of the narcotics, however, managed to elude the police and escape.

The sleuths took custody of the driver and his conductor as investigations continue.

Daring escape

“But as detectives homed in on the suspicious bags, one passenger, believed to be the owner of the narcotics, made a daring escape, disappearing before officers could react. The bus driver and conductor were arrested on the spot and taken into custody for questioning as the manhunt for the fleeing suspect intensified. The seized narcotics are now being detained as exhibits in the ongoing investigations,” police added.

The recent bust-up comes days after the officers thwarted a consignment of illicit ethanol in an operation that exposed a suspected smuggling attempt along the busy Nakuru route.

The National Police Service (NPS) officers made the recovery on Sunday, September 28, 2025, after stopping a vehicle found to be carrying two different sets of registration plates.

Ethanol recovered

During the inspection, the officers uncovered a large stock of ethanol concealed inside the vehicle.

“Upon further inspection, officers recovered 46 jerrycans, each with a 30-litre capacity, all containing ethanol,” the statement noted.

This added up to a total of 1,380 litres of ethanol. Police confirmed that both the consignment and the vehicle have since been impounded.

Two persons of interest were arrested at the scene in connection with the illegal consignment.

“Two individuals were arrested and remain in custody pending arraignment,” the NPS said. The suspects are expected to face charges once investigations are completed.
