Police in Wajir have arrested two suspects linked to a violent robbery at Shawal Petrol Station along Mandera Road in Wajir Township.

The suspects were apprehended following a swift police response to a late-night distress call from the station.

According to police reports, a gang of five men, disguised in jungle uniforms, stormed the petrol station. They overpowered the watchman and pump attendant, tied their hands with ropes before making off with Sh30,000 in cash.

Officers at Wajir Police Station received a distress call and responded immediately.

They pursued the fleeing suspects, leading to the arrest of the two gang members. Three other suspects escaped, with police intensifying efforts to track them down.

During the arrest, police recovered   a mallet, an Administration Police jungle jacket, a military jungle trouser, and a military jungle jacket. The items are believed to have been used to disguise the suspects as security officers to avoid detection.

Speaking to the press, Wajir Police Commander John Gichohi commended the officers for their quick response, which prevented further loss.

“Our officers acted swiftly upon receiving the distress call, and we apprehended two of the suspects. We are actively pursuing the remaining culprits, and we will not rest until they are brought to justice,” said the police commander.

Residents of Wajir Township have expressed relief following the arrest, as crime rates in the area have been rising in recent months. Many have called for heightened security and increased police patrols to curb such criminal activities.

The suspects are in police custody and are expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.

Police are urging anyone with information that could assist in apprehending the other suspects to come forward.

The incident has once again highlighted the rising trend of criminals impersonating law enforcement officers, sparking concerns about the availability of police and military attire in the wrong hands. Authorities have vowed to crack down on the illegal trade of such uniforms to prevent further misuse.

Police investigations are ongoing, and the public is encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies.
