Person of interest linked to recent Mombasa bar attack arrested
By Mustafa Juma, May 2, 2026Police in Mombasa have arrested a person of interest linked to a recent violent incident near Trend Villa Bar, following an intelligence-led operation targeting organised criminal gangs operating within the coastal city.
The National Police Service (NPS), in a statement shared via X on Saturday, May 2, 2026, said the person of interest, believed to be associated with the notorious “Panga Boys” gang, was arrested in Nyali Sub-county after officers intensified surveillance and tracking operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks responsible for attacks on residents and social spaces.
Intelligence-led operation
According to security reports, officers acted on credible intelligence that led them to the Gas Field area, where the said person of interest was cornered and arrested.
“Organised criminal gangs, notably the infamous “Panga Boys,” have for some time posed a serious threat to communities, carrying out brazen attacks on unsuspecting individuals and undermining the safety of both residential neighbourhoods and social spaces in Mombasa County. Their actions not only place lives at risk but also erode the sense of security that communities depend on, making the dismantling of such networks an urgent priority for the National Police Service,” the NPS stated.
“In response, police officers in Nyali Sub-county have intensified efforts to track down those behind these acts, ensuring they are brought to justice. In a recent operation, police launched a manhunt for a suspected member of the Panga Boys gang linked to an attack near Trend Villa Bar. Guided by intelligence and sustained vigilance, the officers traced the suspect to the Gas Field area, where they successfully cornered him.”
During the arrest, police searched and recovered a panga concealed under the suspect’s clothing, raising concerns over his alleged readiness to engage in violent activity.
He is believed to have links to the recent attack near Trend Villa Bar, an incident that has been under active investigation by law enforcement agencies.
“A search conducted on him led to the recovery of a panga concealed underneath his shirt—an indication of his readiness to engage in violence. He was promptly arrested and is currently in custody, where he remains pending arraignment in court,” the statement reads in part.
The individual has since been taken into custody and is being held pending further processing and arraignment in court.
Police say investigations are ongoing to establish the full extent of his involvement in the incident and to identify other possible accomplices within the gang network.
“Even as these operations continue, addressing the threat of organised gangs requires more than enforcement alone. It calls for sustained vigilance, strong collaboration between the public and law enforcement, and continued efforts to dismantle these networks at their roots. Residents are urged to stay alert, report suspicious activities, and actively support security initiatives to ensure lasting peace and security are secured,” the NPS stated.

Crackdown on organised gangs
The arrest comes amid intensified efforts by security agencies to dismantle organised criminal gangs operating in Mombasa County, particularly those involved in violent street attacks and robberies.
Groups such as the “Panga Boys” have in recent years been linked to a series of assaults that have raised public concern over safety in residential and entertainment areas.
Authorities say the gangs operate in small cells, making intelligence-led policing and community cooperation key in curbing their activities.
Public urged to assist police
The National Police Service has urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to help prevent further incidents.
