Parliament gives nod to new police chief’s swearing-in
Japheth Koome is expected to be sworn in as the new Inspector General of police.

Japheth Koome is expected to be sworn in as the new Inspector General of police today after members of the National Assembly approved his nomination yesterday.

MPs unanimously approved Koome’s nomination on grounds that he had the experience required to head the Kenya Police Service.

The MPs adopted the report of the Joint Committee of the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Affairs and the Senate Standing Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Affairs that had approved his nomination.

Following his approval, the President will be expected to formally appoint Koome (pictured) through a notice in the Gazette.

“The Committees having considered the suitability, competence, experience and integrity of the nominee following the approval hearing process, recommend that Parliament approves the nomination of Japhet Koome Nchebere for appointment to the position of the Inspector-General of the National Police Service,” reads part of the report.

“I am requesting this house to approve the nomination of Koome as he has the requisite skills to lead the service. Koome has been a police officer for the last 31 years and has been waiting for this moment to come,” the joint chair of the committee Gabriel Tongoyo (Narok West) said.

The decision of the National Assembly comes a day after their counterparts in the Senate also approved Koome’s nomination.

In their report, the joint Committee found Koome suitable and qualified and with the necessary experience.
