Operation Rudisha Bunduki gathers pace as another AK-47 is surrendered

The weapon, an AK47 rifle loaded with three rounds of ammunition, was handed over by a resident in Kacheturnguny Village, Muruber Sub-Location, Chechan Location.
This handover marks the latest progress in Operation Rudisha Bunduki, a multi-agency initiative aimed at fostering peace and security in the region.
“Security agencies in Elgeyo Marakwet County have received one illegal firearm voluntarily surrendered by a resident on 5 October 2025, as part of the ongoing peaceful disarmament,” read the NPS statement dated October 6, 2025.
“The firearm, an AK47 rifle loaded with a magazine containing three rounds of ammunition, was handed over in Kacheturnguny Village, Muruber Sub-Location in Chechan Location.”

Disarmament
The surrender follows continuous engagements by local leaders, elders, and security officers, reflecting a collaborative approach to reducing the circulation of illegal arms.
According to the NPS statement from the, this latest firearm brings the total surrendered under the initiative to 281, alongside 2,033 rounds of ammunition and one rifle grenade.
“So far, a total of 281 illegal firearms, 2,033 rounds of ammunition, and one rifle grenade have been surrendered by members of the public.”
The NPS highlighted growing community support as a key factor in the campaign’s success, emphasising the importance of public participation in enhancing regional security.
Days earlier, on October 3, 2025, two additional firearms were voluntarily handed over in Baringo and Elgeyo Marakwet Counties. In Baringo, a firearm was surrendered in Tiaty Central Sub-County and secured by local security officials, while in Elgeyo Marakwet, another firearm and an empty magazine were handed in at Marakwet East Sub-County.
These incidents demonstrate continued support for Operation Rudisha Bunduki, underscoring the role of community cooperation in peacebuilding efforts across the North Rift region.
Ongoing efforts
The NPS noted that voluntary surrenders have steadily increased, with the total number of firearms recovered rising from 232 earlier in the week. Officials commended public participation and urged residents to continue supporting the initiative.
Operation Rudisha Bunduki continues to prioritise community engagement as a key strategy for addressing security challenges in Elgeyo Marakwet and the wider North Rift region.
The ongoing collaboration between security agencies, community elders, and residents remains central to maintaining peace and stability in the area.
