Online portal seeks to end bursary fraud

Mbeere North Member of Parliament Geoffrey Ruku (pictured) has launched an online portal for bursary funds application.

While launching the online portal at Kirie Muminji at the weekend, Ruku said the digitisation will help to curb manipulation that has been previously witnessed in bursary issuance to needy students.

“We want to make this process as open as possible, transparent as possible and as efficient and effective as possible,” Ruku said.

Legislator noted that Mbeere North is an ASAL area that has always experienced crop failure but with the return of bursary funds, the region will bank its hopes on education as its saviour.

“One of the biggest problems in this area is fees payment because of the high level of poverty and we want to make education as a cash crop for this area,” he noted.

Ruku said he will work closely with the heads of institutions so that they key in details of the most deserving students to be awarded bursary.

He at the same time called on parents to continue paying school fees for their children, adding that the government only comes in through the issuance of bursaries to supplement their efforts.

In addition, he told parents not to pay any single cent to anyone claiming to help them to get the bursary funds for their children. He also requested parents to explore other scholarship opportunities.
