One nabbed, police recover chang’aa in Busia
By Faith Lagat, September 11, 2025One person has been arrested in Busia County after police recovered approximately 66 litres of chang’aa during an operation on Thursday, September 11, 2025.
The person of interest was nabbed at a roadblock on Suo Bridge after officers from Busia Police Station intercepted a Nairobi-bound bus during a routine search.
According to the National Police Service (NPS), “Today, police officers from Busia Police Station, while manning a roadblock at Suo Bridge, intercepted a Nairobi-bound bus. Upon conducting a search, they found one individual in possession of approximately 66 litres of chang’aa.”
The person of interest was immediately placed under custody and taken to Busia Police Station, where he is being held pending arraignment in court. The illicit brew was secured as evidence, with police linking the arrest to ongoing measures aimed at dismantling the networks involved in the supply of illegal alcohol.

Nationwide strategy
The NPS noted that the arrest was part of an ongoing campaign against illicit brews across the country.
“This operation is part of ongoing efforts by the National Police Service to curb the production, distribution, and consumption of illicit alcohol across the country,” the statement read.
In addition, the service called on the public to remain vigilant and support authorities by sharing information that may help stop the trade.
“Members of the public are encouraged to continue partnering with the Service by reporting suspicious activities to the nearest police station,” the NPS added.
Back-to-back seizures
The Busia arrest came just a day after another major operation in Nandi County. On Wednesday, September 10, 2025, police in Kapsabet intercepted a motor vehicle transporting approximately 1,375 litres of suspected ethanol. Three suspects were arrested and taken into custody.
“The suspects were taken into custody and are being held pending their arraignment in court. Both the vehicle and the seized ethanol have been secured as evidence at Kapsabet Police Station,” the NPS reported.
Reiterating its resolve, the service stated, “The National Police Service remains committed to combating the illicit trade of dangerous substances that threaten community safety and public health.”
