One feared dead as lorry ferrying alcohol rams into hardware along Mutarakwa–Mai Mahiu Road
By Kiprono Keileb, October 26, 2025A tragic road accident along the Mutarakwa–Mai Mahiu Road at the Limuru junction on Saturday, October 26, 2025, evening left one person dead after a lorry ferrying alcohol lost control and rammed into a hardware shop.
According to witnesses, the lorry was speeding downhill before veering off the road and crashing into the building. The impact was so strong that the vehicle got stuck in the roof of the hardware, its rear wheels left hanging in the air.
One resident who witnessed the incident said the lorry appeared to lose control moments before the crash.
“Nilikuwa nimekaa pale gari ikashuka na speed, alipanda mawe ikafikia hardware,” Kiama Kamau, a resident of Limuru narrated, describing the terrifying moment the truck sped downhill and ploughed into the shop.
The crash caused panic among locals, with several people rushing to the scene to help rescue those trapped inside. Nearby businesses and a local club were also affected as debris was scattered across the area.
“Kulikuwa na club, gari ikakuja ikaingia ndani,” Patrick Muthenji, another resident, said, recounting how the lorry crashed close to a busy entertainment spot.

The mangled wreck of the lorry and the collapsed hardware structure made rescue efforts difficult. Authorities were forced to divert traffic along the busy road to allow emergency crews to access the site.
Residents have since appealed to the government to install speed bumps along the steep stretch between Kamandura and Mai Mahiu, saying accidents there have become increasingly frequent.
“Tunaomba serikali barabara ya kutoka Kamandura kuelekea Mai Mahiu iwekwe bumps,” Fredrick Wangai, a Limuru resident urged, noting that drivers often lose control on the sloping road.
The body of the deceased was taken to a nearby mortuary as police launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.
The Sunday tragedy has once again renewed calls for stricter traffic control and improved road safety measures along the dangerous Mutarakwa–Mai Mahiu stretch, where accidents have claimed many lives over the years.
