Senator Omtatah calls for prosecution of abductors, killers of anti-govt protesters

Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah has voiced his concerns regarding the current administration’s approach to prosecuting those responsible for the abductions and killings of protesters.
Since the anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests began, several youths have been arrested, some have been killed, and many others have been abducted or remain missing.
Omtatah reaction
On Friday, July 12, 2024, six bodies were retrieved from a quarry pit opposite Kware police station by youths.

According to the Mukuru Community Justice Centre, the bodies were found in sacks and had been chopped into pieces.
Reacting to this gruesome discovery, Senator Omtatah called for action against the abductions and killings.
The vocal senator, known for holding governments accountable, insisted that disagreements between the public and those in power should be resolved legally and peacefully.
“Prosecution of the enablers of abductions and killing of protesters is among the issues this administration needs to address. In democratic societies, disagreements with government policies or actions should be addressed through legal and nonviolent means,” he stated on his X account.
Omtatah confirms
He further condemned the killings, stating that they were against human rights and democratic principles. Omtatah holds that the rule of law and respect for individual rights are crucial for a functional society.
“The idea of killing those who disagree is fundamentally opposed to human rights and democratic principles. The rule of law, respect for individual rights, and nonviolent conflict resolution are essential for a just and functioning society,” he added.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority reported that as of last week, 39 people had died in connection to the protests.
