Previous giant schools in Nyanza region are basking in academic glory after they rose again to dominate performance list in the 2020 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exam results.

In Homa Bay county, Asumbi Girls topped after recording a mean score of  9.569 from 8.3 in 2019.

Institution managed 19 As, 82 A- (minus), 101 B+ (plus), 77 B, 54 B- (minus), 14 C+ (plus), eight C and three C- (minus).

The principal, Pino Sati, attributed the good results to students’ hard work and dedication among teachers.

Sati said the school recorded a high mean grade, because it presented low number of candidates compared to the previous years.

A total of 358 candidates sat the exam.

“We are impressed with the good results. Our overall mean score has gone up this year because the school registered comparatively low number of candidates,” she said.

Agoro Sare came second with a mean score of 9.236.

The institution, which produced second best candidate nationally, had 16 As, 88 A- (minus), 119 B+ (plus), 112 B, 84 B- (minus) and 38 C+ (plus).

Its top candidate, Allan Udoma, emerged among the best achievers in the national examination, scoring A with 87.173 points.

Strategic plan

Principal James Momanyi termed the results a remarkable improvement from last year’s mean score of 8.838.

Momanyi attributed the impressive performance to its structured academic programmes.

He said his teachers worked hard by offering academic programmes in an extra-ordinary manner.

He also said the institution has a strategic plan that provides a roadmap on the current and future academic programmes.

“It has become our tradition to work in a structured manner and this is one the secrets to our excellence.

Therefore, our teachers go extra miles beyond the normal academic timetables,” he said.

Maranda Boys High School continued its dominance, emerging top in  Siaya county with a mean score of 9.8 from 8.9 in 2019.

Maranda produced among the top candidates, Henry Madaga, who was ranked position eight nationally  with 87.046 points.

Remarkable result

Deputy principal Jacob Odeny said theirs was a remarkable result despite the challenges occasioned the Covid-19 pandemic. He attributed the exemplary performance to teachers’ dedication in preparing the candidates.

“Our teachers’ commitment has finally paid off. We kept the students learning from home even during long break caused by the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said.
