Ojukwu guides KPA back to KBF league title

His two-year absence saw Equity Hawks dominate the Kenya Basketball Federation women’s Premier League, but on his return, coach Anthony Ojukwu’s winning knack has delivered KPA Women the title again.
On Sunday, the Dockers toppled the Hawks 70-64 in Game Four to win the 2021/2022 KBF Women’s Premier League title, and it’s all credit to Ojukwu’s ingenuity combined with the determination of KPA Women players.
Hawks, who took advantage of Ojukwu’s absence to win the league title back-to-back in the 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 seasons, were dethroned at the weekend after going down 3-1 to the Dockers in a cutthroat best-of-five playoffs series held at Nyayo Stadium Gymnasium for the first two games and Makande Hall Mombasa in the other two over the last two weekends.
Game One went Hawks way 53-51 but KPA bounced back to win Game Two (58-45), Game Three (77-63), and Game Four (70-64) to recapture the title, and coach Ojukwu could not hide his excitement of guiding KPA back to glory.
“It was a great game from both teams and I believe the best team won. The season was great with a few ups and downs of the postponement of the fixture,” an excited Ojukwu said.
Leading 2-1 after Game Three, Natalie Akinyi (16 points), Hilda Indasi (16 points), Medina Medina (15 points), Selina Okumu (10 points), Becky Nkatha (seven points), Rita Aluoch (four points), and Yvonne Akinyi (two points), all ensured KPA were on course secured the women’s title and ultimately ended Hawks’ four-year dominance.
