Officers on Ksh1m bribe case face other charges

Three police officers attached to the DCI Dagoretti base were yesterday charged at the Anti-Corruption Court with conspiracy to corruptly receive a bribe of Sh1 million from a Chinese investor to stop charging his wife with an immigration offence.
The officers — Charles Macharia Wanjiru Samuel, Yunnah Kukhuvilo and Joseph Gikara Gachera — did not plead to the charges filed against them as the main suspect, Julius Onyango Oguma, did not attend the court session as directed.
Senior Principal Magistrate Victor Wakumile ordered Onyango to present himself on March 22 for plea taking.
While deferring the plea, the magistrate allowed the suspects to engage lawyers.
“I allow the defence to put their house in order and issue summons against Julius Onyango Oguma. Plea deferred to March 22, 2022, at 9 AM,” Wakumile ordered.
The prosecution said the four officers, in a dramatic scene, fired in the air to obstruct Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission officers from arresting them.
It is said the three present in court (above) stormed Kabete Police Station and fired several rounds of ammunition, scaring EACC officers and aiding Onyango’s escape.
In the melee, EACC officers claim that Onyango escaped with an Sh100,000 bribe while handcuffed.
The four officers are accused of conspiracy to commit an economic crime, receiving a bribe, obstruction, aiding a prisoner to escape and robbery with violence.
