A Police Constable who was injured during a shootout with a wanted robber has succumbed to the bullet wounds he sustained in the incident.
Constable Andrew Nyakundi, who had been shot in the thigh, died on Monday night from the complications of ruptured nerves, according to police headquarters.
He was one of the four Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers from the Operation Support Unit (OSU) who raided the residence of the suspect, Duncan Ochieng Ndinya, who is said to have been part of a gang behind robberies in Nairobi, Kiambu, Kajiado and Siaya counties.
The suspect also shot Sergeant Francis Singila and Constable Joseph Karanja in the abdomen and Constable Austin Mutie in the right thigh. The three are still undergoing treatment at the Nairobi West Hospital.
Missing firearm
The police headquarters has also revealed that a Ceska pistol, which was seized from the suspect, had been stolen from an Administration Police officer attached to Siaya Critical Infrastructure Police Unit (CIPU).
Constable Job Koech was on May 26 this year issued with the pistol, loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition, to guard the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) Yala branch. The following day at around 5am, he reported off duty and proceeded to his residence.
He later realised at around 3pm that the firearm was missing from where he had kept it under the seat.
A search was conducted but the firearm was not recovered until on Sunday during the shoot out in Kasarani.
