ODM’s Catherine Omanyo vows to vote in Parliament to cut fuel prices

By , April 16, 2026

Busia Woman Representative Catherine Omanyo has said that she will vote in Parliament for decisive action to lower the price of fuel.

She insists that Kenyans are already overburdened with the increasing cost of living and cannot afford to bleed from paying high fuel prices.

In an interview on a local radio station on Thursday, April 16, 2026, Omanyo stressed that she would not be barred by her membership in ODM and that she was negotiating with the government on political matters, allowing her to speak out on issues affecting ordinary citizens.

“Even though I’m in ODM and hoping to negotiate to work with the government, we cannot allow things to go wrong and keep quiet. Whether in opposition or not, we have to stand firm,” Omanyo said.

Lobby to reduce fuel prices

Omanyo affirmed that legislators will be voting on bills that seek to reduce fuel costs on the grounds that Parliament has a role to play and safeguard Kenyans against economic hardship. The lawmaker appreciated the influence of economic forces around the world on fuel prices but still believed that the Kenyan government remains in a position to cushion its people.

“Today in parliament, we are going to vote to make sure that we slash more fuel prices. I know it is a global crisis, but our government is in a position to handle it to make sure that our hard-working Kenyans don’t bleed like they are doing today,” Omanyo added.

The cost-of-living increase

Omanyo’s statement comes in the backdrop of a continuing debate in the country about the cost of fuel and its trickle-down effect on transport, food prices, and overall inflation.

The statement by Omanyo contributes to mounting political pressure on the government since Parliament is now planning to discuss potential changes that can help relieve the burden on households and businesses.
