ODM meets families of persons shot while mourning Raila at Kasarani stadium
By Luke Oluoch, October 24, 2025The Orange Democratic Movement has reached out to the families of casualties of the unfortunate shooting that claimed several people while mourning the fallen party leader in Mois International Sports Centre, Kasarani Stadium on Thursday, October 16, 2025.
Among those who attended the function at Chungwa House are the families of the late Vincent Otieno Ogutu, Evan Onyango Kiche, Josfae Jida Burka and Josephine Akeng’o.
Earlier, human rights activist Hussein Khalid confirmed five deaths during the viewing of Raila Odinga’s body.
Pursuing justice
Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and Elections Director Oduor Ongwen reiterated that the party will stand with the families and help them in their pursuit of justice.
“This morning Edwin Sifuna and Oduor Ongwen welcomed families of the late Vincent Ogutu, Evan Kiche, Josfae Burka,Josephine Akeng’o at Chungwa House. The 4 were among those who lost their lives during the funeral of our PL Raila Odinga at Kasarani and Nyayo Stadiums,” a statement from the party stated.
The incident happened after police indiscriminately shot at an impatient crowd when it attempted to access the venue to pay their last respects to Odinga.
The act sparked widespread condemnation, with Sifuna registering his abhorrence to the action of the law enforcement agencies.

“Those were needless and unfortunate deaths, most of them due to gunshot wounds. We have extended our condolences and pledged support in this tragic loss,”he stated on his Facebook page.
Raila Odinga’s sister, Akinyi Wenwa, similarly, condemned the incident, publicly criticising the handling of mourners during the public receptions of her late brother’s body.
Wenwa noted that while Raila would have been pleased with the tribute, he would have been deeply saddened by reports of people being injured by security officers.
“So I know and have seen the overwhelming love he has received; he would be so happy. But because he was so compassionate, I am sure the only thing making him unhappy now is that some of the people who came to receive his body got hurt by our security organs,” she said.
